Our Founder & Inspiration

The Selkirk Canoe Kayak Centre owes its existence to Milt, City of Selkirk’s Citizen of the Year (2022), founded the club over 30 years ago. His love of paddling inspired countless people to explore Selkirk’s waterways.  His enthusiasm and encouragement could be felt by everyone who met him or paddled alongside him.

Milt started the club at Colville Marina in 1991 and guided its move to Selkirk Park in 1997.  Known for his warmth, mentorship, and tireless dedication, Milt created more than just a club — he built a community where people could learn,  grow, and connect with nature safely. 

 Milt Pedwell passed away on December 14, 2022, at the age of 86, but his vision, spirit, and love of paddling live on in every stroke of every kayak and canoe on Selkirk’s waters. The club continues to honor his legacy, welcoming new paddlers and celebrating the outdoors, just as Milt would have wanted.
